Elsinore (Helsingør)

History:
The modern history of Elsinore starts in 1429 when king Eric of Pomerania decides that ships passing through the Sound should pay a duty known as the Øresundstold. The money was considered the kings own pocket money, but Ellsinore made good money on the provisioning. The duty wasn't popular but existed until 1857.

To help remind the ships to pay, the later king Frederik II build Kronborg Castle on the remains of an old medieval castle. Kronborg Castle is on the Unesco list of World Heritage and visited by 180,000 people every year.

Today:
Today Elsinore is a modern town with a population of approximately 61,000 people and in the inner town of Elsinore it is still possible to see the old medieval houses.

The town is characterized by the ferry service between Denmark and Sweden, which every year transports approximately 11,7 million people.
