Changes in the climatic factors will change the decomposition of organic matter in the soil. This is likely to affect the structural composition of the organic elements in the soil water, which again may serve as an indicator for change.

In all plots of the CLIMAITE experiment, soil water is extracted from the organic layer and the deeper soil layers. The organic elements in the soil water can be chemically examined by NMR spectroscopy.
