15. Are heath plants sensitive to ambient UV-B radiation?

The level of UV-B radiation can affect photosynthesis. When the stratospheric ozone layer is thinning, more UV-radiation reaches the Earth’s surface. Events of increased UV-B levels have become more frequent during spring, but also the overall level of UV- B is increasing in Denmark. No previous investigations have been carried out in temperate ecosystems pointing to the scientific potential. This motivates an investigation of the impact of UV-B on photosynthesis and plant stress. Field studies on heath vegetation by measurements of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence in UV-radiation filter screening manipulations will be the basis of this thesis. In addition, some laboratory work will be required. The project will be carried out near the CLIMAITE experiment and be under close supervision.
